Toilets

Buying a new toilet is getting harder, with the wide range of styles and lower water usage rates picking the right one means spending some time doing research. With the advent of 6 Litre or less flushing getting the wrong toilet can mean a lot of aggravation when the toilet doesn’t flush correctly.

So why change to a new 6L flush toilet?

Buying an older style 13L per flush toilet is now getting harder and I have had clients say to me “ we don’t need to change to a low flow toilet as we are on a well and have too much water”. Although one area may have to much water, we all use the same ground water and in fact, water levels in all the Great Lakes are down a half-metre — the biggest drop ever, according to science writer Wayne Grady, who has just written The Great Lakes: The Natural History of a Changing Region. Toilets account for approximately 30% of indoor water use and with water meters and the need for water conservation changing to low flow toilets will have a big impact on the environment and your wallet.

The main issue when purchasing a low flow toilet is to ensure that it has been MaP tested (maximum performance testing of popular water efficient toilet models). This ensures that the toilet will flush away a certain amount of waste away at 6 litres. This is shown as for example MaP300 or MaP1000. The higher the figure the more waste the toilet will flush away with 6L of water. A good level to look for is between MaP500-1000, any less and you may find you have to flush more than once, which defeats the object of having a low flow toilet. Also available now are dual flush toilets, these toilets give you the option or 3L or less for liquid waste and 6L for solid waste.

The prices of new toilets now range from $100 up to $1000, a higher price does not necessarily mean a better performing toilet, like a lot of things no name brand or big box store own brand toilets tend to be made by larger more expensive manufacturers.
